Authenticity, quality of life and a dynamic economy

Living and investing in Porto: why it’s one of the best choices in Europe

View properties

Porto combines authenticity, quality of life, a dynamic economy and a still-competitive cost — a rare mix in today’s Europe. It is no coincidence that the “Invicta” is, year after year, one of the continent’s most sought-after cities among investors, families and professionals. These are the reasons that make it such a strong choice to live in and to invest in.

01

An award-winning, internationally recognised city

Porto’s reputation is documented in the industry’s leading awards. At the 2025 World Travel Awards, the “Oscars of Tourism”, the city was named Europe’s Leading City Destination for the second consecutive year, ranking ahead of destinations such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, London, Rome and Vienna. It is the confirmation of a remarkable trajectory: in recent years, Porto had already been named the World’s Leading City Destination and Europe’s Leading City Break Destination. These distinctions — alongside Portugal’s continued recognition as Europe’s Leading Destination — attest to the quality and diversity of the city’s offering: heritage, culture, gastronomy, wine and hospitality, all in one place.

Daily life in Porto: a city on a human scale

Living in Porto means living with authenticity. The city has a welcoming scale — it can be explored on foot — yet it offers the cultural density of a major European centre. The Douro is the heart of Porto life: from the port-wine cellars in Gaia to the riverside walks, the river gives the city a unique identity. The lifestyle blends tradition and modernity, with historic neighbourhoods and a thriving, internationally recognised creative, culinary and cultural scene. The city is known for the warmth of its people, a calmer pace than the major capitals, and a cost of living that is still competitive — both to live and to invest. Add to this that Portugal consistently ranks among the safest countries in the world, and Porto becomes a solid choice for families and for anyone seeking long-term stability.

03

Education: international schools and top universities

For those relocating with a family — or investing with their children’s future in mind — Porto offers a solid educational ecosystem. The city and its metropolitan area are home to several international schools, with foreign curricula and the International Baccalaureate (IB), making it easy for families from abroad to settle in. In higher education, the University of Porto is the country’s second-best and one of its most prestigious: it entered the European top 100 for the first time (QS Europe 2026) and features in the world’s top 250 in the QS World University Rankings, with more than 30,000 students and students from over 100 nationalities. It is especially strong in Engineering, Sciences and Medicine — its Faculty of Engineering (FEUP) is a national benchmark, with partnerships with companies such as Bosch, Continental and Volkswagen. For an investor, a university city of this calibre means steady demand for student rentals and the constant attraction of qualified talent all year round.

Transport: getting around Porto (and beyond)

Mobility is one of the areas where Porto has advanced the most. The city has an integrated network of metro, buses and trains, unified by the Andante system, which allows travel throughout the metropolitan area on a single ticket at an affordable cost. The Porto Metro — with six lines, more than 80 stations and around 95 million journeys a year — is undergoing the largest expansion in its history: the new Pink Line links São Bento to Boavista, reinforcing the centre, and the new Ruby Line will connect Casa da Música (Porto) to Santo Ovídio (Gaia), with eight new stations and a new bridge over the Douro, the Ferreirinha Bridge. This expansion brings the two riverbanks closer, cuts journey times and improves access to university and hospital hubs. For international travel, Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport — repeatedly ranked among the best in Europe — connects Porto directly to dozens of destinations and is just minutes from the centre via the metro network.

05

Healthcare: a benchmark public and private network

Portugal has one of the best healthcare systems in Europe, with a National Health Service (SNS) offering universal access and a life expectancy above the European average, and Porto is home to some of the country’s leading hospitals and clinical research centres. Alongside the public system, the city has a strong and expanding private network, with benchmark hospital groups and modern facilities that provide high-quality care, often with multilingual service — an important factor for the growing international community. This combination of public and private gives those living in Porto added peace of mind: access to trusted healthcare at every stage of life.

06

What’s planned through 2030 (and beyond)

What makes Porto particularly compelling for investment is that the city is not standing still — it is at the heart of an infrastructure investment cycle that will position it even better on the European map. The biggest milestone is the new Porto–Lisbon high-speed rail line, one of the largest rail investments in the country’s history, with the Porto-Campanhã station and a new crossing over the Douro (and a new station in Vila Nova de Gaia). As the phases advance, the journey between Portugal’s two largest cities is expected to fall from today’s ~2h49 to around 1h59 in a first phase and, in the 2030 horizon and beyond, to roughly 1h15 — bringing markets, talent and opportunities closer than ever before. In parallel, the Porto–Vigo high-speed link is advancing, which will place Galicia’s second-largest city around 50 minutes away and reinforce Porto’s centrality in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula, with new stations planned at Sá Carneiro Airport, Braga and Valença. On top of all this, the Metro expansion (Pink and Ruby lines) will continue to improve urban and metropolitan mobility. For the investor, the message is clear: each of these infrastructures tends to raise the value of the areas it serves, and investing today means positioning yourself before much of this potential is reflected in prices.
